Broadband connections have become almost a necessity for people nowadays; in this fat paced era, it is a fact that people do not have the luxury of time or energy to seek out access ports when they need to send an email while they are in between their homes or their offices. This is why the USB broadband dongles have become a popular item amongst people who are always on the go. These dongles are compact and lightweight; they are to be equipped with a service provider SIM card for it to function and pick-up signal to connect.

Virgin Broadband has been developed by Virgin Media just for this purpose. It offers different deals and plans designed for different levels of usage. They offer either the pay as you go or prepaid subscriptions as well as post paid or monthly plan with varied data download limits. For monthly plans, the data limit ranges for as low as 1 GB and as much as 5 GB; and from 500 MB to 6 GB for the pay as you go offers. They also offer what they call BYO or Bring Your Own USB Broadband Dongles which a consumer will find beneficial as there will be less cost on their part. They will no longer need to purchase a new dongle and leave the one they already own to accumulate dust in a corner. The only condition is that the broadband dongle be compatible with the Virgin Broadband service; which is fairly easy to check.

The network coverage depends on the area one is in; one can be using the regular 3G or HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) and be able to access up to 1.8 MB speeds. However, when one is outside the covered area, the will only be able to use the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network which will provide slower speeds. When one has already maximized their usage of their download allowance, they may still continue using the service however, the speed will be limited to only 128 Kb per second for then next 250 MB of data used.

The actual broadband dongle has more features than just a modem; it has a provisional slot for a Micro SD card which one can use as a storage device while using the dongle. This is quite beneficial as one no longer needs to plug in multiple flash drives just for storage purposes; and instead just use one. Another feature is that it has a provision for an aerial socket; this is used to connect and external antenna to the dongle to gather stronger signal strength; though this is not a necessity for most, it is still quite a benefit especially if one is in an enclosed area with a lot of network signal obstructions. Using the USB Dongle is as easy as pie; there are no complicated installations required; the plug and play feature is very simple and efficient. One simply needs to plug the dongle in a USB socket on their laptops and the software will automatically install, as soon as that is done, one can begin surfing immediately.
