Wireless Internet Up’s & Downs

July 10th, 2009

The Ups and Downs of Wireless Internet, Exposed!

Wireless internet is practically everywhere, and anywhere. They are in your favorite restaurant, in your school library, in terminals and offices, and even in your backyard (yes, you can use that too, provided that they did not configure any kind of restrictions!)

It is no doubt that wireless internet is up to 35 times faster than dialup because it is capable of establishing connectivity even at ranges way beyond what modem cables can cover. Wireless internet is known for its many names and subcategories, such as Wi-Fi, Hotspot or simply Wireless Access. This type of connection makes it easy for anyone to transfer documents from one computer to another that is within the Wi-Fi range, which means that they can easily connect from one port to another without the need for any complex algorithm or configuration settings that you usually have to deal with wired communications.

The typical connection speed of wireless internet is from 384 kbps to 2 Mbps—quite faster than dialup but a bit slower than broadband connection. Therefore, in terms of speed, wireless internet falls between dialup and broadband, but its performance is very much comparable to services with higher connection speeds, provided that there is no signal loss or attenuation within the vicinity.

One major weakness of wireless internet is with the varying temperature and atmospheric conditions. signal is usually easily attenuated during rainy seasons or foggy climate mainly because wireless internet is still under the principle of line-of-sight propagation, which means that network signal can be easily absorbed by these atmospheric factors if it is at a very significant level.

The famous wireless internet services offer a number of benefits, such as faster connection speed compared to the conventional dialup service, and easy network configuration when it comes to establishing wireless connection, as there is no need for passwords or authentication (especially when you are in a public hotspot).
