What is Wi-FI
April 21st, 2010Well this is a good question isn’t it? We all know it has something to do with mobile broadband and wireless internet connections but can we actually tell anyone what it means, and what it does and why and how, and all the other questions bursting to get out?
Well Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity basically, and it’s just a name that manufacturers use to brand appliances etc to let people know that they can operate without wires and connect to the internet. Games consoles, PCs, Laprops, Mp3s, all these are most likely wi-fi appliances. Now where you see a logo that says free wi-fi access it means you can take your wi-fi device into that place and access the internet for free. Lots of cafes and fast food joints allow free wi-fi access to get the youngsters in. This is simply to sell them stuff of course, but it does come in mighty useful if you want to check your emails on your new laptop but your parents haven’t bothered to put you on your own mobile broadband connection yet.
So that’s what wi-fi is, and if you’re reading this post from your laptop, then you’re using a wi-fi device. It’s actually surprising how many people use these devices yet don’t even know what they are called or why they are called a particular name!
