What is Broadband?

March 24th, 2010

Well, it isn’t such a silly question you know, and therare people out there who are just discovering boadband, never mind mobile broadband.  Therefore we have put together a little explanation about broadband in general, just to let you know what it is and how it works…

Basically broadband is a faster version of a dial up internet connection.  The most common on is an ADSL connection (An Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) which basically means that you have subscribed to a service that stays connected to the internet without dropping and redialing the connection; which is what dial up connections used to do.  You are also enable to make phone calls from the same telephone line without having to disconnect from the internet.

There is little doubt that broadband used to be the thing of the future, but now there is no longer a need even for a physical connection to a telephone network.  With mobile broadband you are granted the opportunity to connect wirelessly to the telephone network and be billed through your internet service provider through the use of a dongle that attaches to your laptop computer.  Dongle’s are usually small devices that simply plug into the side of your lap top and act like a radio transmitter to send and gather information from the internet wirelessly.  Also the next stage of wireless internet is approaching fast too with fibre optic cable networks.  These will allow all users to connect to the internet wireless at home and whilst out and about.  Their broadband speeds will be better and connections will be more reliable due to the underground cables.
