Mobile Broadband Dongle Deals

August 20th, 2009

Mobile broadband these days is a necessity especially for people who uses the internet frequently. Having internet anywhere one may go saves time and increases productivity for people who use it for their business needs. No longer does anyone need to stop and find a computer with an internet connection and lose important time one can be using to do something else that is more productive. One can connect to the internet even when travelling or in a moving vehicle, provided one has a laptop or a mobile broadband subscription.

Most mobile broadband providers make use of dongles to connect wirelessly to individual computers. Originally, dongles were used to act as a security device for softwares. It provides authentication as well as security from illegal use of softwares. It’s a small device that typically connects to a USB port. With the development of more compact electronic devices, a modem is added into the device. This allows communication between the computer the dongle is connected to and an internet service provider.
Broadband Dongles are easy to carry around anywhere and easy to use. It’s as big as a regular USB flash drive and can be easily plugged in the USB port of a laptop or a personal computer. One can literally put it in one’s pocket. Installation is easy and right after it can be used whenever needed without any more installation.
Most companies that offer broadband dongles are mobile phone companies. This is because the technology used by the dongles and mobile broadband is already being used and can be easily implemented over the mobile phone network. All they have to do is upgrade their system to implement changes and expansion.
Wireless internet though has some limitations. For one, at present the maximum bandwidth that can be achieved is 14 Mbps. Also the range of the system is limited. If the subscriber is too far from the provider’s transmitter, then there wouldn’t be any connection or the connection would be really slow. There are also obstacles to consider. If the obstacles between the subscriber and the transmitter are considerable, the connection and speed will be compromised.
This limitations and the fact that bandwidth is not cheap is the reason behind the download limits that providers employ. Postpaid subscribers can only download 1 to 15 Gigabytes of data per month. Anymore than that and the subscriber is charged for every extra Gigabyte downloaded. Maximum bandwidth offered is also different in every package. Bandwidth offered ranges from 1.8 Gigabits per second to 7.2 Gigabits per second, with 3.6 Gbps the most commonly offered bandwidth by the mobile broadband providers. Also, the contract period affects the amount of monthly payments. The shorter the contract period the bigger the monthly payment is. This is because the subscriber not only pays for the service for the month, but also for the broadband dongles. The price of the dongle is spread throughout the contract period. There are also pay as you go broadband dongles. These deals only require a onetime payment for the dongle and the subscriber can top up to be able to connect to the internet.
