So you’re looking to go mobile with your broadband connection, so what do you look for from the service provider?  It’s important first to know what you’re talking about so you can correctly identify what your needs are…

Not everyone will need as much bandwidth, but these days it’s always safe to have  little bit more than you need as long as you don’t go too far and get mobile broadband with a huge bandwidth that you’ll never use.  If you don’t have enough bandwidth then you’re likely to be sitting in front of your PC waiting for a movie or clip to download and you’ll have to watch it in bits; this can be enormously frustrating can’t it?  I’m sure we can all remember dial-up modems!  Argh!

• A movie can cost you up to 1.4GB of Bandwidth from your mobile broadband connection
• A music track on mobile broadband can cost you 4MB
• Online gaming can cost you from 4-10 MB per hour of playing.

The average person uses about 2GB a month, but if you’re a serious gamer and/or downloader then you’ll almost certainly need more.  You should be careful if you underestimate your mobile broadband needs because your provider will usually just bill you for your usage over the limit of your contract, and if you can’t afford it then you’ll end up going a little broke.  Make sure you’re aware of what you need and the charges for it.
